On October 29th the Coquitlam Midget A2 Chiefs stepped on the ice in Kelowna at the Krueger Electrical Midget Tier 2 Hockey Tournament. The team was not a favorite to win the tourney but Head Coach Mike Baron summed it up saying that “teamwork, perseverance, sportsmanship and hockey talent“ carried the team through the weekend.“ We all knew we had our work cut out for us after losing a hard fought first game 2-5 to the Semiahmoo Ravens, but we accepted it and stepped up to the challenge” said Captain Joseph Costante. Coming off a demanding week of 3 consecutive tiering games in the preceding 4 days, the team showed no sign of fatigue in Kelowna. They went on to beat the Westside Warriors 3-2 and Pursuit of Excellence 8-2 guaranteeing them 2nd place overall. Both goalies Travis Pollack and Kai McDonald made clutch saves at key points in their games while forwards Matthew Coons, Sidney Harper, Captain Joseph Costante, Brett Auclair, Jamie Gee, Max Fritz, Robyn Batchelor and Peter Matthews kept making the plays and putting the puck in the net.
The Chiefs advanced to meet Rossland-Trail in the semi-finals defeating them 4-2. Defenseman Andrew Walton scored the opening goal to take an early lead in the tournament championship against the 1st place Westside Warriors. Defensemen Brian Duck, Brett Humphreys, Ryan Sinkie, Samuel Suchy, and Craig Tittertington stepped up the game allowing few scoring chances while goalie Kai McDonald took care of business in net, securing a shutout . With aggressive offensive physical play, the line of Cameron Davitt, Peter Matthews, and Robyn Batchelor scored 3 more goals to win the tournament for Coquitlam 4-0. Congratulations Chiefs!
